Question 698593: the manager of a fish store has water that is 10% salt and water that is 25% salt. he needs 5 gallons of water that is 20% salt.
a)write a system of linear equations that you can use to determine how many gallons of each type of salt water the manager should combine. define your variables.
b)solve the system and determine how many gallons of each type of salt water the manager should combine and show your work.
Here's what I've got so far:
x = 10% salt
y = 25% salt
System of equations:
x + y = 5
.10x + .25y = (.20 x 5 = 1)
Solving:
-10x + (-10y)= -50
(.10x + .25y = 1)100 = 10x + 25y = 100
-----------------
0x + 15y = 50
y = 3.33
x= 5-3.33= 1.67

That's correct, and that's the way to do these.
----------
You can use
10x + 25y = 20*5 , using the %'s instead of the decimal values.
