Question 68108: 5x-2y=4
3x+y=9

Answer by Edwin McCravy(20056)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
        5x - 2y = 4
        3x +  y = 9

Solve the second equation for y

         3x + y = 9
              y = 9 - 3x

Substitute (9 - 3x) for y in the first equation:

        5x - 2y = 4
 5x - 2(9 - 3x) = 4

Solve for x

   5x - 18 + 6x = 4
       11x - 18 = 4
            11x = 22
              x = 2

Substitute 2 for x in the equation where
you solved for y:

              y = 9 - 3x
              y = 9 - 3(2)
              y = 9 - 6
              y = 3

So the solution is (x,y) = (2,3)
