Re TY, in both of the word problems you referred to in your TY, variables need to be assigned. 

For ex: x and y representing the amount of money Juan and John originally had 

OR x and y representing the number of single and couples tickets in the 2nd Ex. In both cases y can be expressed in terms of x.

2x + 3y = 5  |Multiplying 1st EQ by 5, 2nd by -2 and adding to eliminate  x

5x +4y = 16



 10x + 15y = 25  

-10x - 8y =  - 32

      7y = - 7

       y = -1   and x = 4   ||   2x-3 = 5, 2x = 8, x =4

and...



4x – y = 14  |multiplying thru by 2 to  eliminate the y variable

5x + 2y = 11

  13x = 39

    x = 3  and y = -2   || 12-y = 14, y = -2 

and...
