You can graph both lines. The solution is their point of intersection. You have to use graph paper and a ruler if you want to be accurate by hand. If you are allowed to use a graphing utility, such as a ti-graphing calculator. You can solve both equations for y, plug them into [y=] for Y1 and Y2, then hit [2nd] [trace] [5] [ENTER][ENTER][ENTER] and the soltuion will appear at the bottom of the screne if the point of intersection is visible.
There are two special cases:
1. If you graph the two lines and one line is lying right on top of the other, the lines have all points in common and it has infinitely many solutions.
2. If you graph two lines and they are parallel to each other, they will never intersect, thus the system is inconstitent and has no solution.
