Use substitution to solve for x and y
3x - y = 3
y = 2x - 1

Answer by funmath(2933)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Use substitution to solve for x and y
E1: 3x - y = 3
E2: y = 2x - 1
:
Substitute 2x-1 from E2 in for y in E1 and solve for x.
:
3x-(2x-1)=3
3x-2x+1=3
x+1=3
x+1-1=3-1
x=2
:
Substitute 2 in for x in E2 and solve for y.
:
y=2(2)-1
y=4-1
y=3
:
Therefore the solution is (x,y)=(2,3)
:
Sanity Check, does that solution work for both E1 and E2.
3(2)-(3)=3--->6-3=3--->3=3 E1 Checks
3=2(2)-1--->3=4-1--->3=3 E2 Checks
Happy Calculating!!!
