Let represent the number of dimes and then has to be the number of nickels. Dimes are worth 10 cents each, so the total value of the dimes must be cents. Likewise, nickels are worth 5 cents so the total value of the nickels is .

All together the dimes and nickels are worth $3.10, which is the same thing as 310 cents, hence:
