Question 524127: The problem asks to solve the system using the substitution method. The equations are: -2x+y=6 and 4x-2y=5. In the book this is number 12, since they only show the answers in the back of the book to the odd numbers I did number 11. I got that right but I can't figure this one out. Could you please show me the steps to doing this problem. Thank you.
Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The equations are:
-2x + y = 6
4x - 2y = 5
we will use the 1st equation for substitution, add 2x to both sides and we have:
y = 2x + 6
:
Replace y in the 2nd equation with (2x+6)
4x - 2(2x+6) = 5
4x - 4x - 12 = 5
0 = 5 + 12
0 = 17; obviously this is not a solvable problem, no solution is the answer
