usually a graph has the x axis for the horizontal line and y for the verticle line so if your u=y then the line for y=x-2 produces the following points:
(2,0), (3,1),(4,2),(5,3),6,4) etc. thus the slope is (1-0)/(3-2) or 1/1 or 1
