to check this using substitution method, you need x and y values ...plug them in your equation and if the left side of equation is equal to the right side x and y values are solutions.
I will take for x=2 and y=5 and check if these values are solutions:

using substitution method we have 4%2A2%2B5%2B1%2F2+=14
8%2B5%2B1%2F2+=14
13%281%2F2%29+=14
13.5+=14.......... the left side of equation is NOT equal to the right side x and y values are NOT solutions.

now, I will take for x=2 and y=5.5 and check if these values are solutions:

using substitution method we have 4%2A2%2B5.5%2B1%2F2+=14
8%2B5.5%2B1%2F2+=14
13.5+%2B0.5+=14
14+=14.......... the left side of equation IS equal to the right side x and y values ARE solutions.
