Question 43309: I'm not finding a single solution to the attached problem. It seems they would all be true. What am I missing??
Solve the system of inequalities.
{ x+y greater than or =16 and y greater than or =x
Select the correct answer.
a. { xgreater than or =8-y, y<4 and xgreater than or =y, ygreater than or =4
b. { xless than or =16-y, yless than or =12 and xless than or =y, y < 12
c. { xless than or =16-y, ygreater than or =8 and xless than or =y, y < 8
d. { xless than or =16-y, ygreater than or =5 and xless than or =y, y < 5
e. { xless than or =16-y, ygreater than or =13 and xless than or =y, y < 5
A paysite for tutoring gave me the following answer, but I don't understand. I drew the graph, but I don't understand why C is the answer. Their answer was "The value of y in immaterial, that is y >or= 8 or y < 8.
Option (c)" Why is the value of Y immaterial?? If I didn't shave my head, I'd still be bald!! Thanks for any help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! { x+y greater than or =16 and y greater than or =x
Graph the line y=x; Hatch the half-plane above that line where y>x
Graph the line y=-x+16; Hatch the half-plane above that line where y>-x+16
The v-shaped area that is hatched twice is the solution area.
Note that the lines cross at (8,8), so y must be > or = to 8.
Answer "c" says y<8; it cannot be the correct answer.
But your "c" also says y>=8. That is confusing.
Cheers,
The answer should be y>=x and y>=16-x
That answer would force y to be >=8.
