Let x and (3-x) represent the smaller and larger respectively

Question states***

  4x + (3-x) = -48

Solving for x

      3x = -51

       x = -17, the smaller number.  20 the larger  (3-(-17))

CHECKING our Answer***

    -68 + 20 = -48
