The sum of x and y numbers is 20. The difference of the two numbers is 16.

the system of linear equations representing the problem...

 x + y = 20

 x - y = 16

Solving by elimination method:

 2x = 36

  x = 18  and y = 2 (substituting x into the 1st Eq)
