Substitute the expression for y from the first equation into the second equation to obtain a single-variable equation. As in,

x + 3(2x - 9) = 8

Then, you can easily solve for x, then plug in x into either equation to find y.

Solve each system by substitution

Substitute for "y" in the 2nd equation.
Then solve for "x":

x + 6x-27 = 8
7x = 8+27

y = 2x-9
