you have to eliminate either x or y . to elimiinate y we multiply equation 1 by -1
we get -x-y=-10.
add it to equation 2
3x+y=12
-x+3x-y+y=-10+12
2x=2
x=1
...
x+y =10
plug value of x
1+y =10
y=9
