5x + y = 12
3x + y = 10
Do I add 5x and 3x together to get 8x? And the same with y to get 2y? I am not sure how to work these problems

No adding just gets you another equation in x and y.
Subtracting however allows you to eliminate y.
Try that and see what your result is.
Once you solve for x, use either equation to solve for y.
