solve the following using the substitution method and the elimination method.

3x+2y=34

Use the 2nd equation for substitution
3x + 2y = 34
2y = -3x + 34
Divide both sides by 2
y = x +
y = -1.5x + 17
:
Substitute (-1.5x+17) for y in the 1st equation
4x + 3(-1.5x + 17) = 48
4x - 4.5x + 51 = 48
4x - 4.5y = 48 - 51
-.5x = -3
x has to be positive, multiply both sides by -1
.5x = 3
x =
x = 6
find y using y = -1.5x+17
y = -1.5(6) + 17
y = -9 + 17
y = +8
Check solutions in the 2nd equation; 3x+2y=34
3(6) + 2(8) = 34
18 + 16 = 34
34 = 34; confirms our solutions
