Here is the original system:

step 1 - I see that q's will be easier to get rid of, so I will multiply (ii) by 3 to get
(iii)
step 2 - now, by adding down with (i) and (iii) , the q's are gone and I can solve for p. We get

step 3 - divide by 17 to get
(v)
step 4- now that we have p, we can substitute 3 for p into any equation. Let's put it into (i) and get
we get
subtract 6 to get
divide by 3 to get
so our answer is
p = 3, q = 4.

2) 5p - q = 11 multiply by three so that the number of qs are equal
3) 15p - 3q = 33 add equations 1 and 3
17p = 51
P = 3
Substitute 3 for p in equation 1)
6 + 3q = 18
so 3q = 12
q = 4
Checking in equation 2)
LHS 5 x 3 - 4 = 11 RHS = 11
