A rectangle is five times as long as it is wide.
If it were 24 cm shorter and 24 cm wider, it would be a square.
What are its dimensions?
:
Let x = original rectangle width
then
5x = original rectangle length
:
If it were square, the length and width would be equal, therefore
5x - 24 = x + 24
5x - x = 24 + 24
4x = 48
x =
x = 12 is rectangle width
5(12) = 60 is rectangle length
;
:
Is this true?
12 + 24 = 60 - 24
36 = 36
