Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.5x+1x+.5x=3,560
2x=3,560
x=3,560/2
x=1,780 m. is the length of the long span.
1,780/2=890 m. is the length of the 2 shorter spans.
Proof:
890+1,780+890=3,560
3,560=3,560

The longest cable suspension bridge in the world is the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. It has one long span and two short spans. Each short span is half the length of the long span. The total length of the bridge is 3560m.
What is the length of each span?
-------------------------------------------
Let length of a short span be "x".
Then length of the long span is "2x".
-----------------------------------------
Equation:
x + x +2x = 3560 m
4x = 3560 m
x = 890 m (each short span's length)
2x = 1780 m (the long span's length)
