Take the equations in pairs. Multiply each of the pairs of equations by different factors such that the result will be that the coefficient on one of the variables in one equation will be the additive inverse of the coefficient on that same variable in the other equation. Then add the two equations. Since the coefficients on one of the variables are additive inverses, the result of the addition will be a zero coefficient on that variable, effectively eliminating that variable -- hence the name of the process.
