Assume the problem is:
x =y - 1
y =x + 39

Get rid of the denominators, multiply the 1st equation by 8, 2nd equation by 4
8x = y - 8
4y = x + 156
:
Rearrange the 1st equation for substitution
y = (8x + 8)

Substitute (8x+8) for y in the 2nd equation
4(8x+8) = x + 156

32x + 32 = x + 156
:
32x - x = 156 - 32

x = 4

Find y using eq: y =x + 39
