Question 151320: Hello may someone please elp me with this question im very confused!
The length of a rectangle is 3 in. more than the width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 24 in.
I THINK THAT I AHVE FOUND THE VARIABLES LENGTH=3iN. WIDTH=24iN.(AM I RIGHT???)

What is the expression for the length in terms of the width?
What is the length of the rectangle?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The length of a rectangle is 3 in. more than the width.
L = W + 3
-------------------
The perimeter of the rectangle is 24 in.
P = 2L + 2W
24 = 2(W+3) + 2W
24 = 2W+6 + 2W
4w + 6 =24
4W = 18
W = 9/2 = 4 1/2
L = 4 1/2 + 3 = 7 1/2
--------------------------

Let x=width and y=length

Since the "length of a rectangle is 3 in. more than the width", this means that y=x+3. Also, because the "perimeter of the rectangle is 24 in", this tells us that P=24

P=2x+2y Start with the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle

24=2x+2(x+3) Plug in P=24 and y=x+3

24=2x+2x+6 Distribute

24-6=2x+2x Subtract 6 from both sides.

18=4x Combine like terms.

18/4=x Divide both sides by 4.

x=9/2 Reduce.

So the first part of the answer is x=9/2 or x=4.5. This means that the width is 4.5 inches.

y=x+3 Go back to the first equation

y=9/2+3 Plug in x=9/2

y=15/2 Combine the fractions.

So the second part of the answer is y=15/2 or y=7.5. This means that the length is 7.5 inches.

Answer:

So the width is 4.5 inches and the length is 7.5 inches
