solve using a system of two equations in two variables?
Four years ago, Katie was twice as old as Anne was then. In 6 years, Anne will be the same age as Katie is now. How old is each now?
----------------------------------------------------------
Let katie's age not be "k"; Let Anne's age now be "a"
4 yrs ago equation: k-4 = 2(a-4)
6 yrs from now eq : k = a+6
---------------------
Rearrange:
2a-k = 4
a-k = -6
----------------------
Subtract the end equation from the first to get:
a = 10 (anne's age now)
---------------
Substitute into a-k = -6 to solve for "k":
10-k = -6
k = 16 (katie's age now)
