: Can you solve this system of equations by using multiplication with the addition method?
x/2+y/5=13/10
2x-3y=-10
This question is from textbook Prentice Hall Algebra 1
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x/2+y/5=13/10
2x-3y=-10
---------------
Multiply thru the 1st equation by 10.
5x+2y = 13
2x-3y =-10
-------------------
Multiply thru the 1st equation by 3 and the 2nd equation by 2 to get:
15x + 6y = 39
4x - 6y = -20
---------------------
Add to get:
19x = 19
x = 1
---------------------
Substitute into 2x-3y = -10 to solve for "y":
2*1 - 3y = -10
-3y = -12
y = 4
-----------------
Solution: x=1; y = 4
