Question 1181774: Ali is planning a March Break down south for the class. She has been told by the travel agent that 5 days accommodation and 3 meals a day will cost $550 per person or 6 night’s accommodation and 2 meals a day is $600 a person. How much are they charging for a meal and for a day?

The other tutor says the numbers don't seem right because the dollar amounts should be whole numbers.

The reason they are not in her solution is because she set up the problem incorrectly....

5 days plus 3 meals a day (15 meals) costs $550:
5d+15m=550
d+3m=110 [1]

6 days plus 2 meals a day (12 meals) costs $600:
6d+12m=600
d+2m=100[2]

From [1] and [2], m=10; then d = 80.

ANSWERS: $80 a day and $10 for each meal
