Hi,
Make x = larger number
Make y = smaller number
x + 1 = 3y............Eq(1)
x - y = 13............Eq(2)
Rearranging Eq(1)
x + 1 = 3y
x = 3y - 1
Substitute back into Eq(2)
x - y = 13
3y - 1 - y = 13
Collect like terms
2y - 1 = 13
2y = 14
y = 7
Substitute y = 7 into Eq(2)
x - y = 13
x - 7 = 13
x = 20
Larger number = 20
Smaller number = 7
