if the sum of two numbers, x and y, is 60, we have
x%2By=60........eq.1

if one number is 4+times as large as the other, we have
x=4y.......eq.2
substitute x from eq.2 in eq.1
4y%2By=60........eq.1, solve for y
5y=60
y=60%2F5
y=12
o back to
x=4y.......eq.2, substitute y
x=4%2A12
x=48



answer: the numbers are 12 and 48
