Try to isolate any terms of y on one side.




Multiply both sides by b.



and you can use fraction arithmetic to make the right side as one single expression, if you want it that way, which you did already, correctly.

x/a + y/b = 1 multiply both sides times a and b
ab(x/a) + ab(y/b) = 1
on the left a cancels a and on the right b cancels b, and you get:
bx + ay = 1
