4x-y = -8...................(2)

subtract 2 from 1
2x = 2
x=1
plug x=1 to get y
6(1)-y = -6
y=12

If you are working on solving a problem like this, then your level of math knowledge should be enough for you to know that the proper use of parentheses is important.

One tutor who responded guessed what the system of equations really was and came up with a solution.

It should not be the job of the tutors to guess what your system of equations is. That's your job.

The other tutor who responded started working on the system of equations exactly as you posted it and showed that you end up with an ugly system which is not easily solved.

        Did I say " out of good sense " ? - - -   No, it is AGAINST of good sense.
