Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Starting one hour later, Jonathan sets out walking at 8 km/h to overtake his little sister who averages 5 km/h. How long will it take Jonathan?
:
Let t = time it takes J to catch up with his sister
Then
(t+1) = time traveled by the sister
:
When J catches up with his sister, they will have traveled the same distance
Write a distance equation; Distance = speed * time
:
8t = 5(t+1)
8t = 5t + 5
8t - 5t = 5
3t = 5
t = hr = 1 hr = 1 hr 40 sec
:
:
Confirm solution by find the distances:
8 * (5/3) = 40/3
:
5 * (3/3 + 5/3) = 40/3
