Let x = the original length; y = original width
:
2x + 2y = 240
Simplify divide equation by 2:
x + y = 120
or
y = (120-x); for substitution
:

New length = .9x
New width = 1.2y
:
2(.9x) + 2(1.2y) = 240
Simplify, divide by 2
.9x + 1.2y = 120

.9x + 1.2(120-x) = 120
.9x + 144 - 1.2x = 120
.9x - 1.2x = 120 - 144
