The sum of two numbers is 12.
The difference of two numbers is 2.
Find the numbers.
SOLN
Call the two numbers x and y. Thus we can write
x + y = 12 and
x - y = 2
Now add the equations and get
2x = 14
x = 7
so that
y = 5
The two numbers are 7 and 5.
