Question 102333: -3(x+5)=8x+18
i don't understand the process of moving the variable to one side of the equal sign.
Answer by elima(1433) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-3(x+5)=8x+18
First you want to go ahead and distribute the -3;
-3x-15=8x+18
Now you want to get both variables, in this case the x,on the same side;
so we will go ahead and subtract the 8x from both sides, by doing this we move it over,
-3x-15-8x=8x+18-8x
collect like terms;
-11x-15=18
Now lets move the -15 to the other side, so we have to add it to both sides;
-11x-15+15=18+15
-11x=33
now we want x alone, so we will divide each side by -11;
x=-3
Hope this helps
