Answer by Edwin McCravy(20056)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
for what values of m and n is (5,-3) the solution for (x,y)?
The equations being:

We substitute (5,-3) for (x,y) in both equations:

Simplify them:

Simplify further:

And finally:

---------------

Checking

becomes:

Adding the two equations to eliminate y

Substituting 5 for x in 4x-y=23:

   4x-y=23
4(5)-y = 23
  20-y = 23
    -y = 3
     y = -3

(x,y) = (5,-3)

So it's correct.
