Question 898010: Please help me solve this equation, I tried and I am not very good... : You work 10 hours and earn 85$, What is your earning rate?
I've tried to solve it like this; 10hours/1$ = 85$/1hour but then I had gotten lost because it didn't look right... So I tried just dividing both by five and thought it would be easier... 2hrs=17$ so I put 1hr= $8.50 and don't know if I had done it right or not... Please help.

Key idea, RATE, like ration, like RATIO, the comparison of two numbers, usually in the form of a fraction.

One worked 10 hours and earned $85.
Just form a rate with those measures, INCLUDING THE UNITS. That's all; nothing more complicated. Form the ratio!

How's this:

Did you want THAT ratio?

If you wanted this the other way, then now you should know what to do.

You are correct! The rate is $8.50 per hour.
It's not that difficult though!! All you had to do was divide the total earnings: $85, by the number of hours
worked: 10, as follows:
= $
Although the above is much easier, you could have also set it up like you tried to, as follows:
, with R being the per-hour rate
10R = 85 ----- Cross-multiplying
R, or per-hour rate = , or $
