Every set always has two subsets, the empty set and the set itself. We write those as

Then {1,2,3,4} has these proper subsets:

{1}, {2}, {3}, {4} {1,2}, {1,3}, {1,4}, {2,3}, {2,4}, {3,4}, {1,2,3}, {1,2,4} {1,3,4}, and {2,3,4}

In all, the set N={1,2,3,4} has 16 subsets.
