Converting measures of volume: cubic feet and cubic meters

Meters,  centimeters,  and millimeters are international units to measure length.
Among them,  meter  (m)  is the  base unit.  Centimeters (cm)  and millimeters (mm)  are derived units:  1 cm = 0.01 m  and  1 mm = 0.001 m.
The derived units for volume are cubic meter  %28m%5E3%29,  cubic centimeter  %28cm%5E3%29  and cubic millimeter  %28mm%5E3%29.
Closely related unit of volume is liter.  It is used to measure liquid volumes.  1  liter is  1000  cubic centimeters.
Barrel is unit of volume used to measure volumes of extracted oil.

Feet and inches are widely used in  USA  as units of length.
Internal inter-relation between feet and inches is  1 ft = 12 in.
The derived units for volume are cubic foot  %28ft%5E3%29  and cubic inch  %28in%5E3%29.
Besides of it,  other units for volume often used in USA are gallons and oz.  These units are used for liquid volumes.

Obviously,  if people have so many units for volume,  they need sometimes to convert measures from one unit to another.
In this lesson you will find how to convert cubic feet to cubic meters and vice versa.

1. Converting cubic feet to cubic meters

You, probably, know that
    1 ft = 0.3048 m
It implies
    1 ft%5E3 = 0.3048%5E3 m%5E3 = 0.0283168 m%5E3
Now,  if you need to convert,  let say,  10  cubic feet to meters,  you simply have to multiply  10  by the conversion factor  0.0283168:
10 ft%5E3 = 0.0283168*10 m%5E3 = 0.283 m%5E3 (approximately).
In general,  if you need to convert  V  cubic feet to cubic meters,  you have to multiply  V  by the conversion factor  0.0283168
    U = 0.0283168.V.
Here V on the right side is the given measure of volume in cubic feet.  U on the left side is the measure of the same volume in cubic meters after conversion.

Example 1

Convert  100  cubic feet to cubic meters.

Solution

100 ft%5E3 = 0.0283168*100 m%5E3 = 2.83168 m%5E3.

2. Converting cubic meters to cubic feet

If you need to convert,  for example,  10  cubic meters to cubic feet,  you simply have to divide  10  by the conversion factor  0.3048%5E3 = 0.0283168:
10 m%5E3 = 10%2F0.0283168 ft%5E3 = 353.147 ft%5E3 (approximately).

In general,  if you need to convert  U  cubic meters to cubic feet,  you have to divide  U  by the conversion factor  0.0283168:
    V = U%2F0.0283168.
Here U on the right side is the given measure of volume in cubic meters.  V on the left side is the measure of the same volume in cubic feet after conversion.

Example 2

Convert  1000  cubic meters to cubic feet.

Solution

1000 m%5E3 = 1000%2F0.0283168 ft%5E3 = 35314.7 ft%5E3.
