Question 75873: Melissa is driving a sports utility vehicle along the interstate at a constant speed of 55 mph. A sports car one-half mile behind her that is moving at a constant speed passes her in 60 seconds. How many miles per hour is the speed of the sports car?
Answer by checkley75(3666) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
55mph*60 sec=distance
55*1/60=.917 miles
The .5 miles + the additional .917 miles says that the 1.417 miles was covered is 60 sec.
Thus the distance is 1.417 miles in 60 sec.
1.417=1/60X cross multiply
x=1.417*60
x=85.02 mph for the speeding car.
