Ed and Alice walked to the dock at 5 miles per hour, jumped into the boat and motored to Destin at 15 miles per hour. If the total distance was 20 miles and the trip took 2 hours in all, how far did they go by boat?
---------------------
Walk DATA:
rate = 5 mph ; time = x hrs ; distance = 5x miles
----------------------------------------------
Boat DATA:
rate = 15 mph ; time = 2-x hrs ; distance = 15(2-x) miles
------------
Equation:
distance + distance = 20 miles
5x + 30-15x = 20
-10x = -10
x = 1 hr (walking time)
2-x = 1 hr (boat time)
Boat distance = 15x = 15 miles
