Residue has many meanings in math. In number theory, residue is synonymous with "remainder" so if the value of x^3 can be congruent to 0, 1, or 2 modulo 3 (which it can) then we say that x^3 covers all residues mod 3.

There are also residues in complex analysis, which I have heard of but they are a little far beyond my reach since I have only learned some calculus and haven't gotten to analysis yet. Here is the Wikipedia article on residue:
