Let x and (x+18m) represent the lengths of the pieces

Question states***

 (x+18) = 3x

Solving for x

   18 = 2x

    x = 9m.  The other piece is 27m.(9+18)  Rope was 36m.

CHECKING our Answer***

   27m = 3*9m
