This is the slope-intecept form of the equation of a straight line. The value of b is the y-intercept, which is the point where the graph crosses the y-axis. The number m is the slope of the line, where slope m = rise over run. It gives the steepness of the line. And of course, x and y are variables which change within the graph from one point to another.

For example y = 3x +2, the y-intercept is 2 and the slope is 3 or 3/1 which means that the rise is 3 and the run is 1. So to graph this line, start with the y-intercept of 2 (that means go UP two on the y-axis and put the first point). Then from this point, go UP three more units, then go to the right one unit, and put the second point there. Draw a line between these two points and it should look like this:
