Question 115602: This is a worksheet that i recieved that has about six sets of 3 questions on it and i do not know how to start. Do you use the quadratic formula on them all?
A geyser sends a blast of boiling water high into the air. During the eruption, the height h (in feet) of the water t seconds after being forced our from the ground could be modeled by h= -16t^2 + 150t.
1. What is the initial velocity of the boiling water?
2. What is the maximum height of the boiling water?
3. How long is the boiling water in the air?
Please Help!

A geyser sends a blast of boiling water high into the air. During the eruption, the height h (in feet) of the water t seconds after being forced our from the ground could be modeled by h= -16t^2 + 150t.
1. What is the initial velocity of the boiling water?
The coefficient of "t" is the initial velocity: 150 ft/sec
-------------------------
2. What is the maximum height of the boiling water?
Use t = -b/2a to find the time at maximum height:
t = -150/(2(-16)) = -150/-32 = 4.6875 seconds
Find the height at that time as h(4.6875):
h(4.6875) = 351.56 ft.
----------------------------------
3. How long is the boiling water in the air?
It is in the air until it hits the ground which is when h(t) = 0
-16t+2+150t = 0
2t(-8t+75)=0
t = 75/8 = 9.375 seconds
