opposite - number = 38
-x -x = 38
-2x = 38

Let n be the number. The opposite of n is -n and 38 less than that is (-n-38), so...
n = -n-38 Simplify and solve for n.
2n = -38 Divide both sides by 2.
n = -19 This is the number.
Check:
