Question 136927: I looked through all the promblems and can't find any like these two. I think I may be over thinnking these because one is absolute value but the other is just ( ). I am trying to review for a test so there aren't any answers and my friend came up with a different answer. Please help!
0-(-5)=5 I think it is 5 my friend says -5 but I thought in regular problems the negatives cancel each other out. Who is right?
The second question is absolute value and I know that is always positive so I think the answer should be 21 because I am adding but my friend says the minus sign stays a minus sign so the answer is 3. That makes sense but I just need another opinion. Thanks a ton!
the absolute value of 12 minus the absolute value of -9

Question 137226: My son and I are going round and round about absolute value. We can't come to an agreement on this problem. Please help us!
5 abs-9+13abs +(-1)
I get 19 and my son gets 109
Thank you for your help.

Question 137306This question is from textbook
: Could you please help me by solving this equation using the substitution method?
y-2x=-7.5
3x-5y=3.2
y-2x=-7.5 by adding 2x to both sides of the equation
y=2x-7.5
Now substitue y(2x-7.5) into
3x-5(2x-7.5)=3.2
3x-10x+37.5=3.2
-7x+37.5=3.2
-7x=3.2-37.5
-7x=-34.3 by dividing -7 to each side of the equation
x=4.9
Your y answer is:
y=2x-7.5
=2(4.9)-7.5
y=2.3
I would be very much appreciated to you. Please help!
Thank you.

Question 137729: Can someone tell me if I am doing this right? The problem is...1/2|x-2|<4
If I pull the x-2 out of the absolute value, it becomes x+2 so I now have 1/2(x+2)<4. Multiply it out...x + 2/2 < 4. Divide 4 by 2...x + 2/2 < 4/2 So, the answer I get is x < 2.
It seems too easy. Thanks :)

Question 140184: [ 4-5x] -1 = 33
I understand this topic on my HW and get at least an 85% but at test time i almost always fail within the 30% range.
1 more question/example
[ 7k + 2 ]+3 <12
for #1 what i did was
I subtracted 4 from both 4 and 33 which gave me [-5x] -1 =33
then i took away the absolute value bars and made it an equation -5x-1=29
for my answer my teacher said i got the first 1/2 right by getting -6 but for the positive number (i put +6) she said i did it wrong.
for the second one i was the only one who missed it so please tell me if there's a trick
i re-wrote the absolute value and subtracted 3 from all sides then came up with 7k+2
my answer was k<=1 >-3 the less than sign with an equal is less than or equal to. She said i missed the whole thing.

Question 140788This question is from textbook an intermediate course in algebra
: finishing line is rated by pounds of strain at which it is expected to break. If a fishing line is rated at 60 lbs, the line is expected to break if a fish of about 60 lbs pulls at it. in reality, we do not expect all 60lbs lines to breat at exactly 60lbs. one manufacturer sets the specifications for their 60-pound line to have a tolerance of 5 lbs.
a. on a number line, graph the interval for the weights at which the 60-pound line is expected to break.
b. write a compound inequality representing the interval of the weights at which the 60-pound line is expected to break.
c.write an absolute value inequality representing the interval of the weights at which the 60-pound line is expected to break.

Question 142016: Simplify the following expressions using PEMDAS.
2 + 3 ´ 52 - 7
6 + 3[(12 / 4) + 5]
(4 / 2) + 4(5 - 2)2
-8 - 81 / 9 ´ 22 + 7
Write the detailed steps for simplifying each expression. Discuss the advantages of using PEMDAS in simplifying an expression. Also, compare and discuss how you can have different answers to the same expressions with or without the application of the PEMDAS rule.
