Question 211444: |5x+2| - 10 = -3 and |5x+2| - 10 <= -3
I have to explain the difference in the answers. I was able to get with the first equation:
5x+2=7 OR -5x-2=7
5x=5 OR -5x=9
x=1 OR x=-9/5
I am not sure if I am even on the right track here. I am not sure on the second problem if I solve it the same way with the greater than/equal to sign.

Question 212470: I am currently tryin to solve an absolute value equation with an absolute value on both sides. The equation is |-x+4|=|4x+2| and I cannot solve it because the example I've been given to follow is inadequite, the example equation in my book is |x+5|=|2x+1| the book solves it like so,
|x+5|=|2x+1|
x+5=2x+1
5=x+1
4=x
or x+5=-(2x+1)
x+5=-2x-1
3x+5=-1
3x=-6
x=-2
Unfortunately this has put me at a loss because the book only shows this example and offers no explanation for the magical dissapearence of the x the 2 or the 1 in the first solution, nor does it show how the -(2x+1) became -2x-1 or where 3x came from or where -2x even went for that matter in the second solution. Would someone please be so kind to resolve the example with one hundred percent of the steps and not just the important ones so that i can understand where exactly these values are coming from or going too then maybe i will understand it better.

Question 213449: I have a word problem to solve. I saw it solved on here before, submitted it to my teacher and it was wrong. Could somebody please help me with this one!
Michael tosses a horseshoe at a stake 30 ft. away. The horseshoe lands no more than 3 ft. from the stake. Writa an absolute value inequality that represents the range of distance that the horseshoe travels. Solve the inequality.
This is the one I saw here before:
Ix-30I<+3
-3<=x-30<=3
-3+30<=x-30<=3+30
27<=x<=33
Thanks for the help!

Question 214857: The arrival time t of train B must be at least 5 minutes different from the 4:00 P.M. arrival time of train A.
So far I have,
absolute value of tb-? is greater than or equal to 1/12
I cannot figure out what should be subtracted from train b.
