What is the cost of (one orange)?

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1st: 4 oranges + 5 apples = $3.56
2nd: 3 oranges + 4 apples = $2.76
------------
Multiply 1st by 3 and 2nd by 4 to get:
3rd: 12 O + 15 A = 10.68
4th: 12 O + 16 A = 11.04
---------------
Subtract 3rd from 4th to get:
A = 0.36 (36 cents per apple)
------------------------------
Substitute into 1st (or 2nd) to solve for "O".
4 O + 5*0.36 = 3.56
4 O + 1.8 = 3.56
4 O = 1.76
O = 0.44 (44 cents per orange)
