Question 883030: solve for
absolute value y-8 = absolute value 4y+3
Hello,
I didn't understand what the professor wrote on my paper and I am trying to study the steps she put. if you could show me the steps I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time. - Jackie

Answer by LinnW(1048)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

From this we know the following possibilities
1) y-8 = 4y+3 or
2) -(y-8) = 4y+3 or
3) -(y-8) = -(4y+3) or
4) y-8 = -(4y+3)
Notice that if 1) is equivalent to 3)
and 2) is equivalent to 4)
so we just need to solve 1) and 2)
1) y-8 = 4y+3 or
2) -(y-8) = 4y+3
Solving 1) first
y-8 = 4y+3
add 8 to each side
y = 4y + 11
add -4y to each side
-3y = 11
divide each side by -3
y = -11/3
Solve 2)
-(y-8) = 4y+3
-y + 8 = 4y + 3
add -4y to each side
-5y + 8 = 3
add -8 to each side
-5y = -5
y = 1
So y can be -11/3 or 1
