Question 8516: I need to solve the absolute value equation.
5+3|x-4|=0
This is what I tried, but I'm not sure if I'm correct. I believe the equation is unsolvable.
5+3|x-4|=0
-5 -5
-------------
3|x-4|=-5
3 3
----------
|x-4|=-5/3--unsolvable ?

I would definitely think that it's unsolvable, AKA, there would be no solutions. An absolute value sign says that whatever the insides of the absolute value sign turns out to be, turn it to a positive if it doesn't turn out positive in the first place.

In this case, you ended up with |x-4| = -5/3. Try plugging in ANY value for x, and that absolute value will ALWAYS turn it into a positive number.

If there is a solution to this kind of problem, AKA, ending up with |x| = a where a < 0 (AKA, a is negative), I would like to know.
