When a number is surrounded by a []. It is indication that the number is an absolute value. For example, if we have [-4] then answer would be 4. The reason is any number within those brackets is a positive.

Lets take this back to your example, [-8], so if we know it is an absolute value. Then we take the positive value within the brackets, so the answer would be 8.
Hopefully, that makes sense.
